board of directors
Peter Scharer - Board President
Peter’s career path began by spending 8-years proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps. After the military, Peter started his own business, which specialized in asset protection and solutions. That kept him busy for the next 25 years, traveling and developing business partnerships, however, he always made time for his athletic endeavors, which were and still are very important to him. Highlights include numerous finishes at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, The Leadville 100, and summiting many of Colorado’s 14,000-foot-high peaks (14ers). Peter has traveled the world extensively visiting over one hundred countries, enjoying, and getting to know the people and cultures. But his greatest passion is helping those who are physically challenged achieve success. Joining Foresight in 2016 was the perfect marriage of his passion for athletics and for helping others. He hopes that his skills as an expert skier, having skied for the past 57 years, and his patience and compassion for others will continue to be a great asset to the success of the Foresight Program. But most importantly, Peter feels that any time spent with the courageous and inspiring blind and low vision program participants is a gift to him. |
Amy Bryer - Past President
Donating my time and talent has been a part of my life for nearly 30 years and it’s a thread that I weaved through my career. Even as I began my work experience in Journalism, I made time to volunteer at animal shelters and read for a blind friend. My years as a reporter at Colorado weekly and dally newspapers took me from covering city government and technology back to nonprofits yet again. I left newspapers and continued freelance writing and public relations. I was contracted by for-profit agencies but I was always drawn back to clients in the nonprofit sector. One of my longtime clients, Foresight Ski Guides, has a mission to bring the exhilaration of skiing to blind and visually impaired youth and adults. To call the work “rewarding” would be an understatement. I frequently observe the bravery of teens (some of whom were blind since birth) who put on skis and partner with a sighted guide to ski down a black diamond at Vail. I don’t personally guide our skiers on the slopes but I was energized by the process of making it all come together for them, and the people around them, through fundraising, social media, and operations. Foresight Ski Guides inspired me to educate myself on business analysis and strategies that breed success in a nonprofit environment. I recently enrolled at Johnson & Wales University in Denver and I’m working toward my MBA. I live in Denver with my husband and two kids, a dog and a cat. Our free time is spent attending my kids numerous sporting events, skiing and biking when we can. |
Bill Murphy
Bill has been guiding blind and visually impaired skiers since 1982. At first with the Colorado Ski School for the Blind and now with Foresight Ski Guides. He has been in leadership roles with Foresight as a member of the Board of Directors, as President, and as a Sr. Guide and trainer of guides. He is constantly reminded of why he guides when rewarded with the smiles and enthusiasm shown by the Foresight clients. He has developed some life changing friendships and vows to not stop guiding until his legs are worn down to little nubs! |
Jan Masto
I have been a proud board member of Foresight Ski Guides over the past 6 years, but I have been a volunteer guide/shadow since its inception in 2001. Foresight’s program empowers, encourages, and gives confidence to those individuals who are blind or visually impaired (VIP) by offering a venue that gives them accessibility to a variety of outdoor sports. |
Kevin Rose - Treasurer
Kevin is looking forward to another fun season with Foresight Ski Guides. He began guiding visually impaired skiers in 2002. Over the years Kevin has met some wonderful people that have helped build great experiences. “Let’s get out on the snow and have some fun.” Kevin is married, has two sons and lives in Colorado. Some of Kevin’s favorite activities include being a volunteer ski guide for visually impaired skiers, hiking, fishing, weightlifting, working on his Jeep, spending time with his family and their Siberian husky. In the morning of September 13, 2014, Kevin stood on top of Uncompahgre Peak (14,309 feet) with his two teenage sons. It was our fifty fifth fourteener summit together. In Kevin’s free time, he is a Certified Financial Planner™. |
Kevin Foster
Kevin Foster held a variety of Human Resource leadership roles at Motorola Solutions for over 25 years. In 2018, Kevin founded First Tracks Solutions which provides consulting services to companies and non-profit organizations in strategic development and managing change. Kevin currently serves on a number of different non-profit boards that support people with disabilities. Kevin competed as a member of the US Paralympic Alpine Ski Team. Kevin enjoys skiing, hiking, backpacking, and photography. |
Denise Barton
Denise grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, attended the University of Colorado and later earned her MBA from Regis University. Denise lives in the Denver metro area with her husband, Matt, and their 2 kids. She is a Senior VP at FirstBank. In her free time, Denise enjoys skiing, running, golf and cheering her kids on from the sidelines. While Denise has served on various Boards, being part of Foresight is uniquely gratifying—knowing that the experiences provided to VIPs wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of the entire organization. |
